BEHIND THE GREAT BLOG NAME JIMBO RED

My first story deals with the name of my site (Jimbo Red) and how it evolved. For those already familiar I apologize (the last time I ever will on this site). It all started in Calgary in the year 2006. We had been retired for a few months and were still trying to get used to life in Canada after being in the sun for 30 years. We found the winter brutal and the horseflies in summertime, Pandemic. My memories are of an evening on our deck, shrouded in protective clothing fighting an army of horseflies for the meat. Not always winning I might say. Some of those flies were big enough to make love to the turkeys, flatfooted. All the while our guests, were inside, peering thru the patio windows, seeing if they were going to eat meat that evening.

Well, we decided to head west and see if there was any other place we might want to settle. Eventually our journey took us to Osoyos, BC in western Canada’s wine region. I was only 56 at that time and unsure of being able to fully retire. What I was sure of though, was that “I was done with the corporate world, the stress and those that had contributed to my misery”. Well lo and behold we came across a vineyard and winery for sale. It included 3 years worth of product, aging and getting ready for the market.

While discussing this opportunity with my daughter she asked the question “so what are you going to brand your product”? Not wanting to get stuck without an answer I blurted out “the name of my wine is Jimbo Red”. Of course she scoffed and said “dad you are so dumb no one will buy that wine with a name like that”! To which I replied, “well daughter, if I put a $175.00/bottle price on it, YOU WILL BUY IT!” She thought about it a minute and said “you know dad, YOU HAVE A POINT THERE”! Hence the name JIMBO RED.
