FAREWELL AREQUIPA, OUR FIRST RETIREMENT TRIP IS HISTORY – 2007 IN PICTURES

I BELIEVE THIS IS DEYSI’s FAMILIES HOME WHILE THEY WERE GROWING UP AND WHERE I FIRST HAD TO GO ASK PAPI’s PERMISSION FOR HER HAND. IT BROUGHT BACK FOND MEMORIES.
HERE ARNIE AND PAPI ARE SHARING THE GREASE CUTTER, ANISADO. I HAD BEEN TO THIS RODEO BEFORE. BESIDES DEYSI WAS IN BETWEEN ME AND THE BOTTLE.
SHE TURNED HER BACK FOR AN INSTANCE AND I “CUT” SOME SERIOUS GREASE.
THERE IS THE OTHER END OF THE TABLE, THEY HAVE THIER OWN SUPPLY OF ANISADO ALSO.
IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH ANISADO, THEY EVEN BRING YOU A BAND TO HELP YOU DIGEST.
BIG SOLE AND DEYSI ON ONE OF THE PLATFORMS AT PAUCARPATA. I BELIEVE THEY WERE AGRICULTURAL AND BUILT IN INCA TIMES OR BEFORE.
AT THE ENTRANCE WAY TO LA CAMPINA PAPI ACCOMPANIED BY OUR NEPHEW NONO AND HIS MOM.
HERE PAPI GETS READY TO DIP HIS FEET IN A MOUNTAIN SPRING COMING DOWN FROM THE ANDES
JANUARY 2007 STANDING ALONGSIDE OF THE CREEK THAT EVENTUALLY FEEDS ALL OF THE SURROUNDING FARMLAND.
I CAN GUARENTEE THAT PAPI, COULD HAVE STILL RODE ON ONE OF THESE TAXIS, IF DEYSI WOULD HAVE ALLOWED IT.
I THINK THIS WAS A UNION HERD, SOME STOOD THERE LOOKING MEAN WHILE OTHERS HAD THEIR BREAK
FROM OUR COVER PHOTO, THIS YOUNG WAITRESS WAS SAMPLING THE VAT OF CHICHA TO MAKE SURE IT WAS READY TO CONSUME.
THE MENU TO DIE FOR. YOU COULD HAVE CHICHARRON, DUCK RICE, STUFFED HOT PEPPERS, GOAT IN THE OVEN, PIGS FEET AND MUCH MORE.
A LOOK AT THE MILL AT SABANDIA. ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES I VISITED IN AREQUIPA AFTER MEETING DEYSI.
SAME, SABANDIA MILL THIRTY YEARS BEFORE – CIRCA 1978.
AGAIN IN 1978 AT THE MILL WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. MY HOW YOUNG WE WERE.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. THIS ONE SHOWING OUR NIECE “LITTLE SOLE’ ” IN A RARE PHOTO, DURING THE “CHE” PHASE OF HER LIFE.
THE MIRADOR AT SACHACA. I BELIEVE THIS WAS CONSTRUCTED IN ABOUT 1860. NO BETTER VIEW OF AREQUIPA CAN BE HAD.
THIS ONE A LOOK AT THE PALACIO GOYENECHE, WHICH MIGHT HAVE BEEN BUILT AROUND 1550. IT WAS THE ESTATE OF THE GOYENECHE FAMILY FOR A FEW HUNDRED YEARS.
PAPI POSING NEAR A PLAQUE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF SAN PEDRO DEL SOLAR – JANUARY 2007
ONE OF OUR INEVITABLE FAMILY LUNCHES. IT SEEMED THAT EVERY DAY WE VISITED A FAMOUS LOCAL EATERY. AT THIS LUNCH, NOTICE THE BIG JUGS OF CHICHA WE WERE DRINKING.
I THINK THIS ONE IS A PICTURE OF A BIG TURKEY’S FOOT! BUT I AM NOT REALLY SURE.
ROUNDING THE CORNER, I AM INDEED CONFRONTED BY A TOAD.
I CAN IMMEDIATELY SEE WHERE SOME OF THE FAMILY HAVE BEEN SPENDING THEIR AFTERNOONS. NONO HAS STYLE.
BIG SOLE’ WAS KIND OF A NATURAL AT THIS SPORT. HMMMM, I WONDER WHERE SHE HAD SPENT HER YOUTH?
THE RIO CHILI VALLEY. ON THIS DAY MOUNT CHACHANI WAS VIELED IN CLOUD.
NOW THIS IS HOW YOU USE THE LAND! WATER FROM THE RIVER IRRIGATES UP THE SIDE OF THE VALLEY THROUGH A SYSTEM OF CANALS AND LOCKS.
AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE VIEWPOINT ABOVE THE RIO CHILI. WITH THE TOUR GROUP. NONO ON THE CAMERA.
I COULD NEVER LEAVE THIS VALLEY WITHOUT A PICTURE OF THE RETREAT FOR OLD AND TIRED CATHOLIC PRIESTS ONCE THEY HAVE FINISHED TREKKING THROUGH THE ANDES AND CONVERTING SOULS.
JANUARY 2007, JUST NORTH OF AREQUIPA PERU, ON OUR FIRST RETIREMENT TRIP. MY GOD WE WERE STILL YOUNG. A QUESTION THOUGH. WHY DOES SHE ALWAYS STICK HALF OF HER BODY BEHIND MINE? I ALWAYS LOOK ENORMOUS WHILE SHE LOOKS FIT.
I CHOSE THIS ONE FOR MY LUNCH ONE DAY. MAN WAS IT TENDER! YUMMMM!
AS ALWAYS WHILE IN AREQUIPA WE NEVER MISSED A CHANCE TO HAVE LUNCH WITH THE FATHER OF DEYSI’s SISTER-IN-LAW E. HIS NAME IS
DON PANCHO”.
I CANNOT RESIST ONE LAST PICTURE OF DEYSI’s DAD. HE WAS THE PATRIARCH OF THE FAMILY.

Another great recollection – narrative and photos! Thanks. I think it might be worth a trip to have adobo for breakfast – sounds delicious! But not too much grease cutter!

    Deysi’s little sister Y says:

Lindas fotos y memorias! Can’t wait to see Arequipa after 36 years!!

JimboRed replies; I am happy you like the photos and hope it brings you some memory. My God, you haven’t been back for 36 years! I didn’t even think you were 36 years old!

Bendiciones.

Big Sole’ writes; I start by thanking you for bringing to my mind these beautiful memories, those moments that we shared, on trips and walks, very beautiful memories, dear Jim. They say there is no better memory than writing and photos. But I think your memory is excellent, I didn’t remember, for example, that Juliana’s father was left taking care of the house. Very good! Blessings.

Soledad; I am happy that my humble offerings can bring you some memories of our times together in the past. I am also happy about our times in Peru and love to go thru my photos and try to remember the good times. JimboRed
