OPINIONS

MY OPINION MATTERS IS THE CLUTCH FINALLY SLIPPING

The beauty of an aging mind. One man’s opinion. As time goes on, and one realizes that the old clutch might be going and the bands may be slipping, some benefits become apparent. It is as if a new life is starting.

The greatest realization became obvious, when, after many months/years I decided to visit my basement movie theatre once again. For the first years after retirement, I watched movies a few times a week. Over these years we had amassed a collection of 1500+ movies. After retirement we made a movie room downstairs complete with projector, screen, snack bar, balcony, recliners and a library. So after becoming tired of the online offerings of Netflix, etc. I returned to see what I might have, that I could watch again. My taste runs to historical movies, light violence (where everyone is killed but in a good way like Rock’n Rolla), good dramas (like Vin Diesel in “find Me Guilty”), thrillers (like Hotel Cortez) and romances (not).

So having some time I selected a movie and watched it front to back with great interest. It was so good that I selected another and the same thing happened. I was engrossed. I went upstairs to see Bubbaloo and tell her that I had just watched the two greatest movies ever and asked her why we had never watched them before. Well she gives me that patient look, a little condescending, and says “but you have dear,” “you have just forgotten”. Well that hurt like hell.

I slinked away and the next day repeated the process. Same result. I loved the movie and asked again why I hadn’t seen it before. Again a look of sympathy, pity and patience came over her and she quietly said you watched that only a year ago. It then struck me like a Thunderbolt. My god I have a whole new library of movies to watch! Wahooo! I tried the same with my book library. Same result! A new set of books to read. Since then I have tried it in many different situations.

For example if I have the scorecard and really concentrate, I can manage to forget 2 or 3 strokes a round in my golf game. My game has improved and everyone overlooks it and just pats me on the back and says it will be ok bud. It is especially handy if I am asked to do a chore that I am not wild about. I just kinda let it slip my mind and I have a very solid excuse. Like I said at the start, IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE FAILING MIND IS A BEAUTIFUL THING!
