RANTS OR THINGS THAT PISS ME OFF – MODERN DAY MOVIES
Yet another Rant! This one about today’s modern movies. In the “day” movies were made essentially from books that had been published or from stories written specifically for the making of a movie. Each one was individual and different from the one before. The Genre may have been the same but the subject was usually quite different. Each and every time you entered a theatre the feeling was magic. You never knew what to expect, but you did know that what you were going to see was a very professional presentation of someone’s original idea.
These adaptations of a good book were made, many times, at the risk to a movie company of going under if the idea or presentation to the public was not perfect. Actors were paid, but not in the range of insane money, as it is today. Sets were created from scratch for each theme and were spectacular, costing more than the price of the actor.
“Classic Movies” such as Ben Hur, Fiddler on the Roof, Scarface, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Gone With the Wind, Godfather, James Bond, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Star Wars, The Bible, etc. etc. Each one was a great masterpiece of entertainment. Entering a movie theatre in those times was an adventure and something to look forward to. The memories created by the cinema were long-lasting and in some cases helped inspire future generations of people wanting to work in the entertainment business.
Fast forward to today. My God, it seems like 2 of 10 new movies are repeats and remakes of successful movies from the past. How many times, I might ask, can I watch spider man, batman, superman remade over and over again. Always with the same story and less and less effort going into the making of the movie. It makes me crazy. You might say well in the past they remade Godfather into sequels and I would agree. Each one of those sequels, in my mind, was a big letdown from the original. What about James Bond you might add, it was made into many, many sequels and versions. The difference in my mind was that each one was based on a new book, hence became a new stand alone movie.
Another 2 of 10 are animations, where actors do not need to act. They only to read a script and depend on voice recognition for their huge wage. Those that cannot get by on voice recognition have their names displayed in large letters, almost as if they had done something other than read a script. Cartoons I used to love as shorts in front of the feature presentation. Multiple animations as the feature presentation each and every week of the year makes me crazy. These are basically mass produced to keep the “ten theatre venues” full with subject matter. A further 3 of 10 are supernatural creations featuring Zombies, Super Heroes, Fantasy Heroes and the Fantasy Evil.
Finally a further 2 of 10 are the inevitable Sci-Fi movie. Either a repeat or spinoff of of one of the original classics such as Star Wars or Star Trek. and each time a little less content and a lot more noise. This scenario repeats itself over and over again. At the most there may be room for one, original type movie at a time for most of the movie year. That means if the original movie is a comedy, then that is your choice of things to watch until the next release of movies. You do not have a choice of A Romance, A Thriller, A Western, A Crime Story, A Historical Classic; all of which are only made on or two times, each a year! Pay the actors more and give them more free time to sit on their asses and criticize Government and Religion.
Now before I finish this rant, I know some of you are going to say “there are lots of movies made for TV that you can now access”. I agree, there are. OMG it took me about 10 days of isolation, watching this drivel, before I wanted to kill myself. Watching movie after movie filmed in a warehouse, with the only lighting being indirect or strobe. Not being able to see what was occurring or going on and weird music playing in the background at about twice the volume of the speakers, left me ready for suicide! I give up, I’m back to the basement watching movies from the past. I know, I know what you are all thinking, “well he’s old anyway”.

Seems a little dramatic! I can think of at least a dozen movies you’ve seen in theatres in the last year that you liked!! Long live Batman!
