THE H…D’S DO TIMES SQUARE A NUMBER OF TIMES
During our 18 month stay in Pennsylvania, we had the opportunity to visit New York City on numerous occasions. I think I can safely say that it was one of Deysi’s favorite places to visit, both then and to this very day. Something about the sense of “action” that permeates the atmosphere of this city, seems to appeal to her desire to visit it over and over. We were relatively close to New York and had easy access to it travelling on I95 straight north from where we lived. It was a short hop thru New Jersey, across the Hudson River and into Manhattan.
The journey took about 2 hours from home. The total distance was less than 120 miles. Or alternately you could take the train from near home, into New York for under $10.00. It seemed like most of the time we drove in order to have the convenience of transportation once we arrived. Almost always we stayed on or near Times Square, and almost every trip we managed to see a live show, or a play, in one of the theatres in Times Square. Basically our tours were centred around Manhattan and as far north (from the World Trade Center) as Central Park. We did much of the tourist type things. Such as, the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the museums surrounding Central Park.
Much of our tours were on foot, however we also utilized taxis, the subway and our own vehicle depending on the situation. An interesting fact in these visits, was that although Ron really disliked Mom and Dad’s incessant field trips, she did enjoy going to New York and did so without protest. There was something about this city that was a huge attraction to all of us. The girls were growing up fast. Ron had taken over much of the family camera work, while Ange kept us happy with her bright smiling disposition. I am going to attach a slideshow to this post and let the pictures tell the story through glimpses of our time during our various journeys thru this magic city.
EDITORS NOTE: The photo at the top of this post on the title page, and shown again as the first photo in the slideshow (attached) shows Ron and Ange in the summer of (1993) posed in front of a monument called The Sphere. This monument was located in the Peace Plaza at the twin towers of the World Trade Center. I believe this was the last time we saw the twin towers in person, prior to their cowardly destruction at the hands of terrorists. This monument was later, recovered from the rubble in the aftermath of the 9/11 bombings and transplanted to Battery Park in Manhattan. It remained there until moved again, in 2017, to its final permanent location in Liberty Park at the site of the former World Trade Center. It was a monument that stood for world peace.
Another Editorial Comment; It has been pointed out to me by someone of good credibility, that I have missed or mistaken one trip we made to New York, for an earlier trip we made to Philadelphia. This was in the presence of D2 and during his visit with us. We took him on a weekend excursion to New York. I checked my videos of that time and sure enough he was there in all his glory, at Ellis island and again on the top of the Statue of Liberty. It then all came flooding back. I remember we all shared one room with two bIg beds and a cot. It was here that D2 decided that I snored and that he couldn’t sleep with that noise! I protested and said it was Deysi, but he said he listened and sure enough it came from my mouth, busted! Oh well, he survived. Anyway I am going to add back in his New York pictures, just to keep the record straight.

Thanks Amy, it seemed easy to get good shots in that setting. Desyi and Ron took most of them. I was still carrying my movie camera around.

I still haven’t been back as an adult. It is near the top of my list to go back soon.

Did we ever go at Christmas time?! I am dying to go at Christmas!

We didn’t but I bet it is mighty cold there around Times Square in the winter. I can’t imagine climbing the Statue of Liberty up frozen steps, or standing out on the observation deck at the Empire State Building. My winter trips now need to be closer to the equator!
